Charter Capim Grosso, Brazil Mission Trip A Success!

Members of the Cluster 22 Capim Grosso Mission Team completed a successful summer journey to visit and work with the Medical Missionaries in Capim Grosso Brazil.

The 8 member team, comprised of parishioners from Holy Cross, St John’s, and St. Bartholomew’s, traveled to the state of Bahia Brazil during June and July this past summer.

This journey was made possible by the strong spiritual and financial support of all four member churches in our cluster. This year’s travelers included 4 high school and college age students. The group was welcomed warmly by the MMM’s in Salvador following a full day’s journey through Boston, Miami, and Sao Paulo. After having the opportunity to briefly visit the large coastal city of Salvador during the Festival of St. John the Baptist, the group made another 5 hour bus ride into the dry, hot inland area to a smaller town called Capim Grosso, which means “land of the tall grass”. During the 8 day stay in Capim Grosso the missionary team had the opportunity to visit and see firsthand the tangible results of the many years of fundraising efforts by the families of our parish, including the children of Holy Cross School and the Faith Formation Program.

Please take a moment to look at the various pictures below related to this journey to familiarize yourself with the faces and places we experienced in Brazil. In addition to the hospitality afforded us by the MMM’s, we were heartily welcomed by local families, as well as by the staff and children of St. Christopher’s Preschool. We were able to witness the many projects in the local area ministered to by the MMM’s, including the school, food and nutrition programs, women’s co-ops, health and wellness projects, agriculture programs, and water collection projects. It is clear that the MMM’s provide invaluable service to the children, families, and communities in Capim Grosso and Salvador. The theme of their work however is not simply “charity”, but more importantly “empowerment”. Our traveling group came home with an immense respect for the strength and spirit demonstrated each day by the Medical Missionaries of Mary we met and came to know in our travels. A bond which has been growing over the past 8 years was strengthened on both sides by this journey. Plans are already underway for a follow-up mission journey in 2008.
